Only engines go in engine slots, only outside-facing stuff can go in O and IO, only internal structure can go in I and IO. (outside, in/out, outside, engine) Modules can only go in certain slots, and by and large it makes sense where they go. You can't make a ship with empty modules, you must be able to power the ship, and there are are different slots, called O, IO, I, E. Well, the limits are really common-sense. Looking right now, but not too much there yet. Oh, and you can assume direct control of a ship if you want. It's a fun way to do old-school 4X games. It's lacking right now, but it's enough to get started in the beta. The tutorial is just a set of videos, and then very simple instructions. Is your ship a forward-facing fighter that strafes? Is it designed for broadsides? Does your station have a hole in its anti-missile defenses? Stuff like that looks really cool, once I can get decent at ship design. Turrets have directions you have to determine. I just don't get how to make ships better than the default designs yet.

It's very detailed, and I think powerful. The big hurdle I need to overcome is the ship design section. Design your fleet, and click "Requisition" to have your colonies build the requisite ships to restock it as need be) My first impression is that I like it, and it's removed some annoying things about 4X games, like having to manually build ships to colonize (or for fleet management. You can tweak exactly how you want to play, and take disadvantages to really min/max if you want. The race customization is a great feature, and easy to use. It looks like a a tactical RPG except you're just watching. Instead, you can actually have your ground infantry defend against the invading infantry on the planet grid. I am having trouble figuring out how to invade enemy planets to take them over, but the mechanic is better than the "watch numbers deplete until you land on an empty planet" style you can get in these games. There's the Deep One race, straight out of Cthulhu, and other amusing bits. The space-bear race is called the "Kulrathi Shogunate" and starts on planed "Kahless". Speaking of, the planetary governors aren't terribly smart, but since this is a real-time 4X (space bar is pause, but otherwise ever 5 seconds is a turn), they're critical anyway.Īll the races are a little tongue-in-cheek.

It feels like the concept of a planetary governor expanded to other fiddly parts of the game. There are times when you want to override this, and sometimes you can (you can design trade routes, for example). You issue a general command and the game will interpret the "best" way to handle it. they have cleaned up a lot of options, like if you choose to colonize a planet, the planet you own closest to the planet you want to colonize will make a colony ship and send it out. It is, in many ways, your typical 4X game. Ok, just played through a big chunk of a game.
